PoFest, as we like to call it, begins in a month or so, but next week there are TWO excellent poetry events that you should be aware of. We’re in the biz of promoting poetry, so we want to tell you all about them.

The Sawchuk poems cover

Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7:30pm Audreys Books 10702 Jasper Avenue · Come and celebrate Brick Books’ 35th anniversary with cake and door prizes. Randall Maggs will read from his recent award-winning book about Terry Sawchuk, Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems. Tim Bowling will launch his new poetry collection The Annotated Bee and Me (Gaspereau Press; here’s the info page), which explores Tim’s great-grandparents’ experiences as beekeepers in Edmonton between the years 1906 and 1929.

Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems by Randall Maggs recounts the personal and public life of Terry Sawchuk, premier goalie in the era of the original-six NHL. Although Maggs’ poems focus on Sawchuk and his complex personality, they also convey the physical and psychological hazards faced by professional goaltenders of the age. Illustrated by photographs, the text presents many voices, including Sawchuk’s, in a work that guides readers through the triumphs and failures of a tumultuous twenty-year NHL career.
