SUMMARY:Poetography
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to have a poetic eye? How do writers create an ekphrastic poem from photographic inspiration? Is the way photographers capture the world through their metaphorical and literal lenses a unique kind of poetry? Photographer Jeff Day\, poet and novelist Wendy McGrath\, and poet and photographer Trisia Eddy Woods will discuss their artistic approaches and join moderator Kim Mannix for a conversation on the fascinating intersections between poetry and photography. Join them at ArtsHub Creative Studios! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase Series\, Outreach Series

SUMMARY:Poetry & Stillness
DESCRIPTION:A chime sounds\, and a voice enters the circle of listeners. Amid all the applause and celebration of festival events\, we set aside time to embrace an essential root of poetry: the quiet attention where words are first brought together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeated in a circle\, each participant reads a single poem\, in turn – no introduction or commentary\, just the poem. At the end\, we take a few breaths in silence to absorb and integrate the words and emotions shared. Then the next reader speaks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou are invited to bring one poem (by you or someone else) to read. Poems can be any subject\, form\, or focus. The guiding spirit is communal listening\, as each voice speaks into the room’s still space. Doors are at 10:30am and the reading starts at 11:00am. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is limited to 25 readers. If you would like to read your poem\, email poetry@prairievixenpress.ca with the subject line “Poetry & Stillness Reader”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease Note: This venue is not wheelchair accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShowcase Series

SUMMARY:Ekphrastic Poetry Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Edmonton Poetry Festival invites poetry and visual art enthusiasts alike to join us at The AGA on April 16th for a special showcase of ekphrastic poetry: a writing practice in which the poet describes\, translates\, or otherwise writes in reaction to a piece of visual art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA cadre of featured Edmonton poets (including Kathy Fisher\, Neema Rutegeza\, Kelsey Kliparchuk\, and Luna Delisle-Rosende) are preparing their ekphrastic response to works in the current AGA exhibit Wayfinders: A Constellation of Women Artists. The poets will perform their inspired works in the gallery in juxtaposition with the work that inspired them. The prepared program is expected to be 40 – 50 minutes in duration\, but we are also reserving time afterwards with an open mic for any aspiring ekphrastics that choose follow our cohort’s lead with poetry inspired by the Wayfinders exhibit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCapacity to the gallery is limited\, so we encourage you to RSVP by emailing frontofhouse@edmontonpoetryfestival.com with the subject line “Attending Ekphrastic Poetry Showcase”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendance to the Ekphrastic Poetry Showcase event is free with AGA admission (Adults: $14\, Seniors $10\, Minors under 18 or Alberta Students with ID: Free). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpen Mic | Showcase Series

SUMMARY:We Survived Until We Could Live by Uchechukwu Umezurike: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us to share a reading and conversation about Uche Umezurike’s new poetry collection\, We survived until we could live. These powerful poems examines the aftermath of war asking\, who survives war? What does survival mean? And at what cost? Yes\, the sirens and bombs have ceased. Yes\, peace has settled over the rubble. But even in moments of laughter\, ghosts chafe. Blood still smells in the air. The present is as fraught as the past\, filled with shadows and fumes. Old wounds sting the body and the mind\, rekindling nightmares and memory. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUche Umezurike is a Nigerian author and academic currently teaching English at the University of Calgary and writing both poetry and fiction who has garnered  numerous awards for his work. He’ll be in conversation with Peter Midgley\, writer and editor whose own recent collection Let us not think of them as barbarians won Alberta’s top award for poetry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Coffee News Spotlight Series\, Publishing Series
