Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate

We’re stoked to have none other than Grayson Thate aboard as the City of Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate for the 2017 – 2018 term! Please welcome Grayson!

Grayson Thate is a 19-year-old poet and tap dancer based in Edmonton. His art is largely influenced by the sociopolitical climate, and by his experiences as a queer artist. When he isn’t writing, Grayson is studying physics at the University of Alberta, and doing advocacy and education work within LGBTQ+ communities. In 2016, he was awarded the Loic Cremer Creative Writing Scholarship, a scholarship that recognizes dedication, commitment, and passion to the writing community. Grayson first started working on spoken word poetry at Youthwrite, and has since worked on his craft through facilitating writing workshops, and incorporating his passion for writing with his passion for social justice, in both personal and academic projects. As Edmonton’s Youth Poet Laureate, Grayson hopes to create safe spaces for youth to explore their identities through writing, and hopes to bring recognition to the value of each writer’s individual voice. Through writing, he hopes to engage in honest dialogue about the issues faced by marginalized communities, and hopes to create genuine connections within his communities.
